foraged Irish clay
site-specific, press moulding
Discovering native clay along my local coastline has revealed parallels between the vast geological forces shaping the coast and the transformative process within ceramic making. Through engaging in studies with raw clay at my local coastline, my ongoing experiments forge a creative partnership with the landscape and the natural elements. This process offers me an opportunity to connect deeper to this place and further explore environmental themes through a site-specific practice.
As a starting point for artistic compositions, I began exploring press-moulding and casting sculptural forms from selected rock faces using native clay sourced from the nearby cliff. This is created in collaboration with the rock and the natural elements. I observe how the wind and sun dry the clay before it can be removed and refined by hand in the studio, and how this processes changes with every attempt.
